Jack's Free Pick Friday: St. Louis Cardinals -150 The St. Louis Cardinals are still very much alive in the NL Wild card just 3.5 games out. They took three of their final four games on their road trip against the Blue Jays and Yankees. They had yesterday off to regroup, and now they have a chance to really gain some ground with the lowly Colorado Rockies coming to town. The Rockies were swept at home by the Rays last series to fall to 45-70 on the season with the worst record in the National League. Pitching has been their biggest issue with a terrible rotation and a one of the worst bullpens in baseball with a 4.96 ERA. Colorado is allowing 5.8 runs per game. Ryan Feltner is part of that terrible rotation. He is 4-5 with a 5.75 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 16 starts this season, including 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in six road starts. He has allowed 21 earned runs and 8 homers in 17 2/3 innings in his last four starts for a 10.70 ERA during this stretch. Kyle Leahy is one of the most underrated starters in baseball. He is 7-4 with a 3.44 ERA in 21 starts this season while allowing just 12 homers. 15* MLB Friday No-Doubt Rout on Cleveland Guardians -125 I love the spot for the Cleveland Guardians Friday. They trail the White Sox by 3 games for 1st place in the AL Central so they will be max motivated. That's especially the case after getting swept by the Mets last series. But this is more of a play against the White Sox than it is a play on the Guardians. This is a terrible spot for Chicago, which just lost a 12-11 marathon in 13 innings in Boston late last night. The White Sox now have to travel back home after getting swept by Boston, and they will be taxed both mentally and physically. But the biggest reason I'm on the Guardians is their massive advantage on the mound. Parker Messick is one of the most underrated starters in baseball. He is 8-6 with a 2.57 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 22 starts this season, including 5-4 with a 2.20 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 10 road starts. Messick is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in three career starts against the White Sox, allowing just 4 earned runs in 18 2/3 innings. Noah Schultz is the weakest link in this Chicago rotation. He is 3-8 with a 5.82 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 13 starts and one relief appearance this season. Schultz has allowed 42 earned runs and 31 walks in 65 innings. Bet the Guardians Friday. |

And yet we are getting them as underdogs to the Seattle Mariners today despite having the advantage on the mound, at the plate and in rest. The Rays had yesterday off while the Mariners were losing 11-0 to the Tigers. Speaking of underrated, Drew Rasmussen has been the clear ace of this Tampa Bay staff. He is 10-5 with a 2.91 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 21 starts this season. Rasmussen has never lost to the Mariners, going 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in five career starts against them while allowing just 4 earned runs in 24 innings. Logan Gilbert has been at his worst at home with a 4.12 ERA in 13 starts while allowing 16 homers. He is 1-2 with a 3.97 ERA in six career starts against the Rays. Gilbert allowed 4 earned runs and 10 base runners in 6 2/3 innings in a 6-1 loss to the Rays in his last start against them on July 11th less than a month ago. Bet the Rays Friday. |

Look for them to take out their frustration at the plate tonight against Merrill Kelly and the Diamondbacks and hang a big number on them. But I'm confident Arizona can match them score for score as well with an offense that has scored at least 4 runs in five of their last seven games overall. Arizona will likely go with gas can Merrill Kelly. He is 8-9 with a 5.04 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in 20 starts this season while allowing 23 homers. Kelly has been at his worst at home, going 4-3 with a 6.33 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in eight starts while allowing 30 earned runs and 12 homers in 42 2/3 innings. Kelly does not enjoy facing the Dodgers, going 1-11 with a 5.38 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 18 career starts against them. Roki Sasaki is 5-5 with a 4.64 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 19 starts for the Dodgers this season while allowing 20 homers. Sasaki has been at his worst on the road at 3-3 with a 4.81 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in nine starts away from home. He allowed 5 earned runs and 2 homers in 4 innings of a 14-11 win over the Diamondbacks in his lone career start against them. The Dodgers and Diamondbacks have combined for at least 9 runs in eight of their last 14 meetings. Bet the OVER in this game Friday. |
