Recap

Southern Cal had a decent year in 2010-11 with a 19-15 record as well as a fourth place finish in the Pac-10. During the Pac-10 tourney Southern Cal advanced to the semifinals, then proceeded to go down in the play-in game of the tournament to Virginia Commonwealth.

USC obtained success by being a great defensive group. USC held their opponents to 40.9% from the field shooting and to less than 64 points every contest.

The loss of Nikola Vucevic and Alex Stepheson is going to be tricky to substitute. Vucevic averaged more than 17 points each game and grabbed 10.3 boards every night. Stepheson was the team’s second best rebounder at more than 7 per night and also contributed just under 10 points.

2011-12 Overview

Kevin O’Neill has been the Southern Cal head coach for two years and has offered the enthusiasts teams that play hard and get better as the year goes on. This year’s group has a good deal of contributions to replace, but O’Neill does have Jio Fontan, Maurice Jones, and Garrett Jackson all back. As well as a strong recruiting class the Trojans brought in transfers Aaron Fuller and Dewayne Dedmon.

Backcourt

Southern Cal will be strongly relying on their backcourt starters of Fontan and Jones. Fontan sat out the first semester last year, but returned to lead the group in assists and finished second in scoring at 10.5 points each contest.

Jones was 3rd on the Trojans in scoring with 9.9 points each night, dished out 110 total assists, and established the university record with 69 steals as a freshman. His achievements helped to get him a spot on the conference All-Freshman squad.

Bryon Wesley is a 6’5″ freshman guard who is expected to contribute on the offensive side immediately. Alexis Moore is an additional freshman who should see time and plays properly on the two sides sides of the court. Junior college transfer Greg Allen is a excellent defender and can shoot the three.

Frontcourt

USC’s three big men ought to be Aaron Fuller, Dewayne Dedmon, and James Blascyk. Fuller was compelled be out last year immediately after transferring from Iowa. In his sophomore season for the Hawkeyes he was honorable mention on the All-Conference team with just under 10 points and 6.7 rebounds each night.

These players will likely be pushed in practice by a few transfers who can’t play this season. Ari Stewart came over from Wake Forest and Eric Wise is a transfer from UC-Irvine.

Jamie Dixon and the Pitt Panthers experienced an incredibly successful regular season in 2010-11, but probably went into the spring disappointed. Despite actively playing a challenging Big East schedule the team ended up with a 15-3 record in Big East play, best in the league.

Pittsburgh beat UConn handily in the final regular season meeting, but lost to the Huskies by a couple of points in the Big East tournament. Pitt didn’t have much success in the NCAA tourney either, getting beat in the second round to Butler. After such an amazing season, Dixon and company had to be letdown they didn’t go farther in either tournament.

The 2011-12 edition of the Pitt basketball team will have only two starters back. However, coach Dixon has started a winning tradition and the program has a history of reloading when losing top talent. There is no reason not to think they can’t do it again this year.

Backcourt

Pitt’s guard play centers around Asthon Gibbs. Gibbs opted out of declaring for the NBA draft due to the likelihood of a lockout. Last year he averaged almost 17 points per game on nearly 50% 3-point shooting. If he can improve on those numbers Pitt is going to be a tough out for any team this season.

Travon Woodall will take over for Brandon Wanamaker and the point guard spot. Woodall is a good defender who is going to have to live up to the hype of being an excellent passer. Also getting plenty of action will be Cameron Wright, Durand Johnson, and John Johnson.

Frontcourt

Pittsburgh’s largest losses came in the post due to the departures of both Gilbert Brown and Gary McGhee. Nevertheless, Pittsburgh does get some reliable players returning to go along with some exciting recruits.

Nasir Robinson will bring the expertise to the court. Last season he averaged 9.4 points and 4.9 rebounds for each contest, but he should get a lot more minutes this year and thus see his numbers increase.

Khem Birch was a McDonald’s All-American and one of the best big men coming out of high school. Malcolm Gilbert was also wanted by a lot of colleges on account of his rebounding and shot blocking talent. Those two might be raw, but if they can develop quickly this team is going to have a chance to make a run come the post-season.

Supplying the team with some extra minutes in the post are going to be Dante Taylor, JJ Moore, and Talib Zanna.

Each year we offer our Pittsburgh basketball predictions so you can get yourself ready to beat the college basketball odds on their games.

Not was expected out of Iowa State last season. Pretty much every person figured they could be at the bottom of the Big 12 conference with just two players back from the year before, however the Cyclones were sort of a surprise. Generally, it can be difficult for individuals to get fired up about a .500 season, nonetheless it was the first time Iowa State failed to have a losing record since the 2005-6 season.

In Fred Hoiberg’s first season Iowa State totally altered their identity. Moving from a slow it along and grind it out group to one that ran more and spread the floor. That change of pace helped the Cyclones rank fifth inside the conference and 39th within the nation in offense at 74.8 points for every contest.

Iowa State also shot the 3-ball particularly well last season, nailing 275 (8.6 per game) shots from behind the line. That was sufficient to lead the Big 12 and rank 13th in the country.

2011-12 Overview

Only two starters return for Iowa State this year, however the real key could be the addition of four transfers. Last season this group was termed the top scout team around the nation and helped keep each and every practice competitive. Now Chris Allen, Chris Babb, Royce White, and Anthony Booker will be ready to prove themselves on the floor.

Last season Iowa State wasn’t really deep, so they played a more conservative half-court defense. With far more talent on this year’s roster you can bet they will likely be a lot more aggressive in using pressure to force turnovers.

Backcourt

The Cyclones are going to have to find a solution to replace Dainte Garrett’s numbers. He was a quality point guard who notched his name all over Iowa State’s history books for both assists and points.

There’s still a whole lot of talent in the Cyclone backcourt. Scott Christopherson is a extremely talented shooter who has drained 131 career 3-pointers already. He nailed 86 last year, ending up 2nd inside the Big 12 and 33rd within the nation at 2.8 for every contest. His 44.1 3-point percentage was good for 11th around the nation and he’s buried a trey in 34 straight contests. Christopherson does not turn the ball over, works hard, and shouldn’t need to log countless minutes this year due to the Cyclones’ depth.

You will likely see Iowa State working with a good deal of three-guard sets because of possessing so much talent in the backcourt. Transfers Chris Allen, Chris Babb, and Tyrus McGee are solid shooters. Allen and Babb were Big 10 starters and both averaged just less than ten points for each game back in 2009-10. McGee is coming through from Cowley Community College.

Chris Allen brings three seasons of experience from his time at Michigan State. He’s played in 14 tournament games and two Final Fours. He can not simply shoot from the outside, but can also be a defensive stopper.

Chris Babb made 69 three-point shots in his last year at Penn State and averaged 10.2 ppg in Big Ten games.

Tyrus McGee drained 115 3-point shots last season at a 48.7% clip. He was a NJCAA First-Team All-American and may play both at the two and at point.

Two additional players watch out for are Bubu Palo and Tavon Sledge. Palo played all 32 games last year and proved capable of playing the point position. Sledge would be the one with the most potential. He’s incredibly quick and was ranked as the 3rd best participant in New York City following averaging 25.3 points and 5.2 dimes in his senior year.

Frontcourt

Mevlin Ejim and Jordan Railey both should see action as returning letterman though Royce White, Anthony Booker, and Percy Gibson will all make an impact as newcomers.

Ejim experienced a very productive freshman season last year for the Cyclones. The Canadian averaged 10.3 points and 6.7 rebounds for every game. He was only the 12th freshman in Cyclone history to average double figures. Despite his significant production, Hoiberg thinks Ejim will be even much better this year. Ejim is far more of a small forward, but was forced to move down low last season thanks to the Cyclone’s lack of depth.

Royce White was a really highly touted recruit two years in the past, but failed to play a game with the Minnesota Golden Gophers after which he sat out last year following transferring to Iowa State. White is robust and is an outstanding passer. He’ll be beginning at power forward and could possibly be the star of this team.

Percy Gibson was one of the top big guys in Michigan last season, averaging 21.2 points and 12 boards for each game. Booker was a top-50 player coming out of high school, but only averaged 6.4 points and 4.1 boards as a freshman for Southern Illinois.

Former Buffalo head coach Jeff Bzdelik took off for Wake Forest this last offseason, but he actually left behind a good team for his successor. Colorado went 15-16 last season and they have not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2003. Still, with what new head coach Tad Boyle has to work with gives the Buffaloes hope to end this drought. Boyle came over from Northern Colorado and has the benefit of the three important guys that led Colorado last year. Last year’s Big 12 Freshman of the Year in Alec Burks coming back, as do seniors Cory Higgins and Marcus Relphorde. The three combined to average 47.0 points per contest last year. This team rivals the talent of that 2003 team that made it to the NCAA Tournament, and with a new practice facility and a switch to the Pac-10, interest surrounding the team is very high. First and foremost, the Buffaloes need to get better on defense (74.2 PPG) and hitting the glass (-7.5 margin) to achieve their ultimate goal this season.

The Buffaloes are +2000 to win the Big 12 this season. That translates to a $100 wager would win you $2,000 if they can pull it off. I certainly don’t think it’s likely, but viewing they return more scoring than any other school in the Big 12 it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Check out these NCAA basketball lines for futures wagering at BetUS. This reliable book will give you up to a $500 bonus on your initial deposit simply by signing up for a new account and depositing $500 or more.

Trust in Jack Jones to take make you a ton of money this season. Jack is on a 37-23 (62%) Run with his college basketball picks dating back to last season.

Frontcourt:

Colorado had a -7.5 rebounding differential last year, and it was even worse in league games at -11.4. A big reason was the play of freshman center Shane Harris-Tunks, as well as sophomore forward Austin Dufault playing out of position. An extra season for each should mean the teams gets better in this area. Boyle was able to bring in 7-foot freshman Ben Mills last May who should see time immediately as long as he can hold his own inside. Senior Marcus Relphorde contributed 11.0 PPG and 4.1 RPG last season, but he is known for his penetrating offensive skills more than his defense. Junior Trey Eckloff will be one of the guys coming off the bench after not finding much playing time a year ago. Burks led the team in rebounding at 5.0 RPG, and when a backcourt player is leading the team in rebounding there’s clearly a problem. Colorado will obviously go back to square one as Boyle teaches rebounding and defense a lot more than Bzdelik.

Backcourt:

Burks ended up seventh in the Big 12 in points at 17.1 PPG and was tops in the Big 12 in shooting percentage at 53.8 percent. He could not have had a better freshman season, but for him to reach his full potential he needs to get stronger. Boyle was lucky when he got Burks to remain at Colorado instead of entering the NBA Draft, impressing upon him how his passing offense would help Burks raise his stock. Higgins was fourth in the Big 12 in scoring at 18.9 PPG and finished second behind Burks in field goal percentage at 50.5 percent. It’s hard to conceive how the Buffs could have a losing season with two solid players like Burks and Higgins on the outside who were able to nail more than 50% of their shots even though opposing teams game-planned around preventing them from doing so. The big unknown is freshman point guard Shannon Sharpe, who was forced to redshirt last year after hurting his knee in the preseason and undergoing microfracture surgery. He’ll battle it out with junior Nate Tomlinson, who made 21 starts last season at point guard despite being inconsistent.

Jack’s Pick: 6th Place in the Big 12 – TColorado basketball hasn’t generated much excitement in recent seasons, but there is hope of a reversal in 2010-11. Boyle was able to get Higgins, Burks and Relphorde and their 47.0 PPG to come back, and that’s a win within itself. He has plenty of talent to geniunely make a run at a Big 12 championship, but must get this squad to rebound and defend. Colorado averaged 74.6 PPG last season and can score with any team, but a lack of depth and a question about how much these returning players want to buy in on the defensive end makes it hard for me to pick the Buffaloes to finish any higher than 6th in the standings. I do see the Buffaloes sneaking into the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid, reaching the Big Dance for the first time since 2003.

Head coach Travis Ford vowed to run an up-tempo style here at Stillwater, and he might now have the bits in place to put it into action. The Cowboys were taken almost single-handedly to the NCAA Tournament last year by James Anderson, who Ford had to shape the team around. Oklahoma State went 22-11 and garnered an at-large bid last season before losing in the opening round. Anderson put up 22.3 PPG to lead the Big 12 and 5.8 RPG. Obi Muonelo is the other big departure for the Cowboys. Still, Oklahoma State brings back several key players and brings in five potential impact recruits that are a better fit to run the up-tempo style Ford likes.

Oklahoma State is +1500 to win the league this year. You can find these college basketball spreads over at BetUS where our readers can earn up to a $500 bonus on their initial deposits. All you have to do to claim this bonus is sign up for a new account and deposit $500 or more.

Jack Jones is here to help you build your bankroll this year with his college basketball picks. Jack is among nearly 80 handicappers who specialize in beating the odds each night, and he is on a 37-23 (62%) CBB run as of this article.

Frontcourt:

Matt Pilgrim eventually came on at the end of last season after transferring from Kentucky, averaging 10.9 PPG and 8.0 RPG over his final 12 games. He is a great athlete who can get up and down the floor and is the perfect forward in Ford’s system. Senior Marshall Moses must be much better on and off the floor after a frustrating junior season. Junior college transfer Darrell Williams is a 6’8” 250-pounder who does a good job of clogging up the middle. J.P. Olukemi joined the program in the spring semester and went up against James Anderson every day while redshirting. He is more of a slashing forward who raised eyebrows while learning from one of the best in the nation. Forward Roger Franklin and center Jarred Shaw drew valuable experience while earning time as true freshman last year. 6’8” freshman Michael Cobbins has the worth ethic and skills to be a future great for the Cowboys, but must bulk up if he’s going to be able to handle the grind of a difficult conference schedule.

Backcourt:

Point guard Ray Penn went down last February with a knee injury, but should be at 100% this season. Ford thinks he will be the center of this offense, running the fast-break. Freshman Markel Brown led Peabody Magnet High to the Louisiana Class-4A Championship by averaging 32 points en route to leading his team to an unbeaten 41-0 record. He can play either the 2 or the 3, and should be the best player to help replace Anderson and Muonelo. Keiton Page was forced to play the point when Penn got hurt, but should be able to get back to his more comfortable role of knocking down the 3-pointer. Senior Nick Didorakis has been named a captain due to his all out hustle on both ends, and his smarts. Fred Gulley, Reger Dowell and freshman Brian Williams will likely be role players.

Jack’s Pick: 7th Place in the Big 12 – Similar to most coaches in their third season at a new school, Ford has his recruits in place. He has a more athletic and versatile squad to run the up-tempo game he desires. The conference is certainly up for grabs this season, and even with the losses of Anderson and Muonelo Oky State has enough ability to make some noise. A third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth is probable, especially if Penn can stay healthy and Brown can live up to the hype.

The Texas Longhorns started 17-0 last season and reached the No. 1 rating for the first time in school history. Many expected them to make a Final Four run, particularly with future NBA candidates in Avery Bradley, Damion James and Dexter Pittman. But over the next couple weeks, Texas would complete the year with a 7-10 record while losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Wake Forest. Head coach Rick Barnes believes the way they ended last season was due to a lack of team chemistry. Barnes felt that there were too many egos on last season’s team, and not enough leadership. The Longhorns will be looking for several players to improve this year to supply that leadership. It would be guards Varez Ward or Dogus Balbay. Senior forward Gary Johnson could be ready to breakout, and even maybe freshman five-star recruit Cory Joseph may be the solution. Either way, Texas needs to get back to playing team basketball after a unacceptable season to say the least.

You will see Texas at +300 to win the conference this season. In my eyes, there isn’t much value in them taking home the league championship. This has the looks of a rebuilding season for Texas. BetUS has these college basketball odds posted, so if you want to bet on which team will win the conference then sign up for a new account with them.
Frontcourt:

The Longhorns may go small this season, with two bigs and three guards on the floor most of the time. Gary Johnson should be their best player inside after putting up 9.4 PPG and 5.6 RPG last season. He’ll be accompanied by five-star recruit Tristan Thompson, who was Cory Joseph’s teammate at Findlay Prep in Nevada. But Texas will have to replace their leading scorer in Damion James, who also ended up as the Big 12’s all-time leading rebounder. Dexter Pittman has also departed after being drafted No. 32 overall by the Miami Heat. Texas does have some experience that will provide depth inside. It will come from seniors Matt Hill and Clint Chapman along with junior Alexis Wangmene.

Backcourt:

Guard play will probably decide how the Longhorns fare this season. Cory Joseph must gel with offensive-minded shooting guards in J’Covan Brown and Jordan Hamilton. Brown put up 9.6 PPG last season but shot just 35.4 percent from the field, while Hamilton is the team’s leading scorer back at 10.0 PPG. Barnes is very big on both players with what they’ve done in the offseason to get better entering their sophomore seasons. Ward and Balbay are both healing from injuries that required surgery, and each is capable of providing leadership and defensive toughness, two traits that are really key to Texas’ success this year. Hamilton, Brown and Joseph should be the team’s primary point producers, and Texas could get some offense from Shawn Williams as well. He is coming back from an ankle injury that took him out of the remainder of the season just seven games into their 2010-11 season. At 6’6”, he can get a shot whenever he wants and is a potentially deadly 3-point shooter.

Jack’s Pick: 5th Place in the Big 12 – Barnes admitted last season was the worst coaching job of his life. He had a team full of offensive talent, but advocated defense and rebounding so much down the wire that his squad could lost their rhythm on the other end. He will always preach defense and rebounding first, but this year he must find a way to replace three of their top four scorers from last season. If Joseph can master the ball screen offense that Barnes likes to use, then it could be a great season in Texas after back-to-back middle-of-the-pack finishes in the Big 12.

Missouri head coach Mike Anderson reportedly turned down a deal that would have been worth close to $2 million per year to coach at Oregon. Missouri would have been in no shape to match that amount of money, a year after they gave Anderson a new seven-year contract worth $1.55 million per year. The decision by Anderson to stay indicates quite a bit about his character. This will be his fifth year in Columbia, and he wants to complete what he started. A veteran roster along with a Top 10 recruiting class gives Missouri a chance to do some serious damage not only in the league, but in the NCAA Tournament. After making it to the Elite Eight in 2009, Missouri went 23-11 overall and 10-6 in conference play last season while making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

BetUS has offered Missouri at +600 to win the league this season. I think this is the best value bet among NCAA basketball odds in terms of futures betting for the Big 12. Missouri is certainly a sleeper, and will be a force this year just two years after they reached the Elite Eight. This sportsbook will give you $500 free cash by signing up for a new account and depositing $500 or more.

Frontcourt:

Justin Safford returns from a torn ACL for his senior season, making him the lone senior on the Tiger roster. Junior Laurence Bowers is healthy after offseason wrist surgery, and hopes to continue his stellar play within the conference where he led the team in rebounds and blocked shots last year. The signings of Ricardo Ratliffe and Tony Mitchell has Mizzou fans buzzing. Ratliffe was the nation’s top junior college players last year, averaging 27.4 points and 11.3 boards for Central Florida Community College. As good as Ratliffe will likely be, Mitchell has the upside to be even better. He was a top-15 recruit with NBA talent who, if he can stay eligible academically, will likely be a grand addition for Missouri. Providing depth down low is junior Steve Moore along with sophomore John Underwood.

Backcourt:

No question the Tigers will have a tough time replacing the services of J.T. Tilller and Zaire Taylor, two team leaders who were able to lock down opponents on defense. But there are still a lot of talented guys on the roster, as junior Kim English is the team’s leading returning point producer at 14.0 PPG. Junior Marcus Denmon scored 10.4 PPG and shot 40.7% from 3-point range last season. English must improve his shooting after hitting just 34.6 percent of his shots, and he also needs to protect the basketball after committing a team-high 71 turnovers. Sophomore Michael Dixon will likely get the first crack to run the point, especially with his speed and ball-handling skills. If he can improve his jumper, the sky is the limit for Dixon. Phil and Matt Pressey are two brothers and two new faces the Tigers are counting on immediately. Both are sons of former NBA player Paul Pressley, who was Anderson’s college roommate. Phil is a freshman who is one of the top prospects at the one, while Matt is a junior college All-American. Look for freshman Ricky Kreklow to work his way into some playing time as well due to his smooth shooting stroke.

Jack’s Prediction: 4th Place in the Big 12 – Anderson coaches a frenetic style of basketball, and he has the players this season to run his scheme to perfection. Kansas, Kansas State and Baylor are the preseason favorites to contend for the Big 12 title, but if Anderson can get his new players to buy into his defensive philosophy, then the Tigers will be competing for that championship as well. Missouri has never reached the Final Four, and they don’t just want to make it to the NCAA Tournament for a third consecutive season. Anderson stuck around because he knows the talent this team has and their upside, which makes the Tigers a clear sleeper in both the Big 12 and on a national level.

The Texas A&M Aggies has done a great job of exceeding expectations under head coach Mark Turgeon. After getting picked to finish in the bottom half of the conference last year, Texas A&M went on to go 24-10 overall and 11-5 in the conference, finishing in a tie for second place in the standings. The Aggies did lose a heartbreaker to Purdue 63-61 in OT in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament, a loss that surely leaves a sour taste in Turgeon’s mouth. Many don’t know this, but the Aggies are one of only two schools to win at least one time in the NCAA Tournament for five straight years. The other is the Pittsburgh Panthers, so that’s quite a feat in itself. This team has proven they can deal with adversity, and they had a lot more of it this offseason. In May, top recruit Tobi Oyedeji was killed in an automobile accident. Then in July, the NCAA denied Derrick Roland an extra year of eligibility after getting hurt last December.

BetUS offers college basketball lines each night for sports gamblers to wager on.
Jack Jones will be offering NCAA basketball picks all season long.
Frontcourt:

Junior forward David Loubeau has made huge strides in his first two seasons on campus. He showed promise in his first year, and genuinely learned a nice back-to-the-basket game as a sophomore. If the Aggies can make a sixth consecutive showing in the NCAA Tournament, Loubeau will be one of the biggest reasons as he’s relied upon to be the offensive threat. Sophomore Ray Turner needs to make some improvements, and with his athleticism he’s more than capable. Turner’s ability to play above the basket could have him becoming one of the best rebounders and shot-blockers in the league. If the Aggies are to be dominant inside again this year, they’ll need to get a lot from three true freshman in Kourtney Roberson, Keith Davis and Daniel Alexander.

Backcourt:

Because the Aggies are missing depth down low, they’ll likely go to three-and-four guard lineups while playing a faster tempo. The Aggies have the skills to play this type of game, especially with point guard Dash Harris as the floor leader. He distributed a team-high 109 assists last year, and if he can shoot better than his 37.4 mark from a year ago, he’ll keep opposing defenders honest. B.J. Holmes is the team’s top returning scorer at 9.3 PPG, and he’s a solid shooter who shot 36.6 percent from outside the arc last season. Developing senior Nathan Walkup along with sophomores Khris Middleton and Naji Hibbert will be important pieces to the Aggies season also. Middleton has the athletic ability and length that has drawn a lot of comparisons to former Aggie great Josh Carter. Walkup has hit big outside shots in the past, but he slumped last year making just 26.5 percent from 3-point range.

Jack’s Prediction: 8th Place in the Big 12 – If the sophomores on this roster can show improvement, the Aggies will shock some people again in 2010-11. But I think there are too many gaps to fill, and too many questions surrounding the players coming back for Texas A&M to make a sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. An NIT appearance is most likely, but as Turgeon has shown in season’s past you can never count his teams out.

The buzz surrounding Baylor basketball is extremely high. That’s because the Bears played in the Elite Eight last year in front of 47,492 fans at Houston’s Reliant Stadium. After going 28-8 last season and finishing 11-5 in the Big 12, the Bears enter their 2010-11 season ranked in the Top 20. Baylor will have to replace three starters, but top scorer LadeDarius Dunn returns and incoming freshman Perry Jones is one of the best recruits in the country. Head coach Scott Drew recognizes this team is talented, but it will be hard to replace the leadership they had last year from Ekpe Udoh, Tweety Carter and Josh Lomers.

Baylor is +250 to win the conference this season according to the college basketball odds. Check out BetUS to find this futures bet, where if you feel you know which team will win the conference you can bet on it.
Jack Jones will help you win on the NCAA hardwood as he adds to his 37-23 (62%) CBB run dating back to last year. Bet his college basketball picks to win more money in 2010-11.

Frontcourt:

Udoh set a Big 12 single-season mark for blocked shots last year, so clearly that’s impossible to replace. The 6’10” Perry Jones will not be the same rim protector that Udoh was, but he can make up for it with his power to finish around the basket. Many believe he will even be the Bears’ top offensive option this year. Almost every recruiting service had Jones listed inside the Top 10 on their lists, and he is supposed to be a 2011 NBA lottery pick. Baylor has never had player leave for the pros after a single season, but Jones is likely to be the first. The loss of 7-footer Josh Lomers could be getting overlooked here. He stepped his game up at the end of last year. Still, there is some length here with the return of starting three Anthony Jones at 6’10”. Jones averaged 6.2 PPG and 4.8 RPG as a solid contributor last year, while junior Quincy Acy put up 9.3 PPG as a sophomore last season. Acy was the team’s sixth man and clearly their most athletic player, throwing down 10 dunks Texas last year.

Backcourt:

Drew believes that LaceDarius Dunn is one of the most underrated players in the country after averaging 19.6 points and 4.8 rebounds last season. He thinks that Dunn will be able to score at will, but hopes he can improve on his ball-handling and distributing skills this season. Though Udoh will be missed on defense, no player will be tougher to replace than Tweety Carter. The senior point guard was the heart and soul of this team, and his vocal leadership cannot be replaced. Taking over for Carter will either be sophomore A.J. Walton or freshman Stargell Love. Walton put up 3.8 points in 17.6 minutes per contest last season, while Love is a nice young talent.

Jack’s Pick: 3rd Place in the Big 12 – The Bears tied for second in the conference last year and gave eventual champion Duke all they could handle in the Elite Eight. It’s hard for me to see them having that same kind of success with the players they lost, particularly Carter and Udoh. Still, Baylor can contend with anyone in the country with a frontcourt of Acy, Anthony Jones and Perry Jones along with Dunn at shooting guard. I wonder about this team’s depth and their ability to find a point guard who can lead this team with the ball in their hands, and that’s why I have them third in the Big 12.

The Kansas Jayhawks are anxious to make their attempt at a conference title this season. They finished 33-3 overall last season, including 15-1 in conference play. It will be tough to replace 49 % of their point production, two top draft choices and the player with the most wins in Jayhawk history. Head coach Bill Self is one of the best coaches in the country, and he’ll have no trouble continuing the winning custom here in Kansas with what he has returning and the new guys coming in. Marcus Morris, Josh Selby and Tyshawn Taylor will be three guys that Self relies on to carry the load this year. Morris and Taylor are juniors who combined for 20 points per contest last season, and Selby is a freshman point guard who is almost a shoe-in for a Top-10 selection in the 2011 NBA Draft. A deep bench will have Kansas in the running for another Big 12 title.

BetUS provides college basketball spreads for you to bet on each night. This trusted sportsbook is also providing our visitors up to a $500 bonus on their initial deposits. They have listed Kansas at +275 to win the conference in 2010-11. So a $100 wager would profit you $275 if this were to happen.

College basketball picks are available at Free NCAA Basketball Picks. Jack Jones looks forward to working on his 37-23 (62%) college basketball run to pick up right where he left off last season.

Frontcourt:

Twins Marcus and Markieff Morris return for their junior seasons, and though it will be tough to take the place of Cole Aldrich, that combo gives Kansas a sound foundation down low. Aldrich was chosen 11th overall in the 2010 NBA Draft, and his rim protection will be missed. But Marcus put up 12.8 PPG and 6.1 RPG last season while Markieff put up 6.8 PPG and 5.3 RPG and each will probably take on even bigger roles this year. Marcus really upped his play within the conference, averaging 14.2 PPG and 7.3 RPG in league play. Sophomore Thomas Robinson and Jeff Withey provide sound depth off the bench. Although Withey is no Aldrich, he’s a 7-foot presence inside and could be one of the league’s top shot-blockers if he can earn the minutes.

Backcourt:

Sherron Collins’ leadership will be missed after being on the team for a school-record 130 wins in his four seasons at Kansas. There’s no doubt that leadership along with his toughness in crucial-game situations cannot be replaced. Selby is in reality an upgrade over Collins when you look at athleticism and overall talent. He is Self’s top-rated recruit of all time, and was ranked in the Top-5 prospects coming out of high school by nearly every service. Taylor will give Selby some service in the backcourt, catering the experience. But Taylor must overcome some of the problems he had on and off the floor last year. Brady Morningstar and Tyrel Reed give this team some senior leadership off the bench it desperately needs. After redshirting last season, senior Mario Little will replace Xavier Henry as the starting small forward. Little was the 2008 Junior College Player of the Year, so he has shown he can get the job done. Self thinks this team will be much more athletic than last season’s team, but it will need to find that leadership that cannot be taught if they are going to get as far as they possibly can.

Jack’s Prediction: 1st Place in the Big 12 – Though Aldrich, Collins and Henry have all left, there is still enough leadership and depth on the Jayhawks to win the league once more. The Morris Twins along with Morningstar and Reed provide the veteran leadership, while the additions of Selby and Little offer the athleticism and talent to replace what has departed. Few schools in the country have a better home-court advantage than the one in Lawrence, and no team in the conference can equal the talent level of Kansas. I believe in Self to put it all together as he’s shown he can do, and if Selby can live up to the hype this team will compete for a national title.
